Sue Fitzgerald is back at the Catto Gallery with a vivid and vibrant show to welcome in the spring. This new exhibition of paintings showcases her love of intense colour and appetite for travelling to exotic lands. Catto Gallery are proud to exhibit one of Britain’s finest colourists.
In 28 new paintings, Sue explores once again the shimmering beauty of European landscape and the tactile delight of silks, ceramics, artefacts and fabric.
Sue Fitzgerald has been exhibiting with The Catto Gallery for well over twenty years. Her work sells worldwide and she has a following of faithful collectors across the globe.
Fitzgerald has lived in the Far East, the Middle East, various places in Western Europe including having her own cottage in the Languedoc area of France.
Home for Fitzgerald now is a small town in rural Kent. However she continues to travel extensively, drawing inspiration from her surroundings, almost 'living' her art! This is so evident in her latest exhibition at Catto Gallery in May 2016.
In this new exciting exhibition we are transported to the Italian lakes. The cascading flowers on balconies and the majestic mountains reaching into such lakes as Maggorie and Lake Orta are spied through open windows.
We can join the artist and bask in glowing, sun baked interiors (reminiscent of Bonnard and Vuillard) with views of lavender laden fields, Cevennes mountains, Venetian canals and distant shores.
Chinese fine blue and white porcelain and Nonya pots, very much associated with Sue Fitzgerald's work, are meticulously painted with a backdrop of luscious antique silks. The exhibition will be a feast for the eye!
Fitzgerald has her own unique way of painting. The surfaces of her work are textured and polished and shine with glowing reds and cobalt blues with splatters of rich gold and silver. Sue's work is also about contrast, between such objects as the exquisite patterned porcelain pot and the great swathe of intensely coloured silk.
There is a sumptuous collection of patterned fabrics and silken shawls cascading out of cupboards in Sue's studio. Fine china from Shanghai jostles for position on shelves with country pots from Provence. The studio is like looking at one of Sue's paintings.
Fitzgerald's work is in many collections around the world. In 2013 she was an invited artist in the ING Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. She has been a featured artist in 'The Artist' magazine with her work portrayed on the front cover. She is one of the main contributors to 'The Artists Colour Manual' by Simon Jennings published by Collins. The book won an award as the best art book of the year.
Over the decades Sue has travelled and worked extensively in the Middle and Far East, and the influence of her wanderings is immediately apparent from a glance at her work. Iain Barratt Director Catto Gallery
